Anesthesia Information
We look forward to providing you with the highest quality of anesthesia care. The five basic types of anesthesia are:
- Monitored Sedation - The physician or qualified health care professional injects a medication through the intravenous tubing so you are relaxed throughout the procedure.
- Local - The physician numbs the operative area with an injection or cream applied to the skin.
- Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) with Intravenous (IV) Sedation - The anesthesia provider injects medication through the intravenous tubing so you are relaxed throughout the procedure. A local anesthetic (numbing agent) is sometimes used too.
- Regional – The anesthesia provider administers a numbing medication to a wide area of the body (arm, leg, or lower half of the body). MAC sedation is usually also used.
- General – The anesthesia provider administers IV medications and/or inhaled anesthetic agents to provide an unconscious state during the surgical procedure.
Your anesthesia provider will work with you, your surgeon, your primary care physician and other medical specialists as needed to ensure that you are medically prepared for anesthesia and surgery. Your anesthesia provider will discuss your anesthesia options and plan prior to your procedure. This will give you the opportunity to address any concerns. Your anesthesia provider will be with you throughout the entire surgical procedure and will also oversee your immediate recovery.
